The Church of St. Jan
St. Jan Church is on the Vrijthof Square and is near to the St. Servaas Church, both of which are hard to miss. The St. Jan Church is bright red in colour and has a tall belltower, which is over 40 metres high. We climbed to the top and enjoyed looking over Maastricht below. There was a small charge for this, which I thought was well worth paying.

Het Dinghuis on Kleine Straat
The Het Dinghuis is Maastricht's old 15th century courthouse and nowadays it is used as a tourist centre. This is a good place to come if you want advice, leaflets and bus timetables. There are lots of shops close by.

The St. Servaas Bridge
I loved how much history there was all over Maastricht and there are many beautiful structures. St. Servaas Bridge (St. Servaasbrug) is one such structure and at more than 700 years old, is one of the most historic bridges in the whole of the Netherlands. Part of the bridge has been replaced with a moving platform, so that tall ships are able to pass.

Maastricht Town Hall - it's a whopper!
I was not prepared for the sheer scale of the Town Hall on the Market Square - it really was colossal. It is around 350 years old and many markets regularly take place here. It is a World Heritage Site. Do try and go in if you can, if for nothing else, to see the extravagent double staircase, which was created when two governors despised each other so much that they never wanted to used the same staircase! Talk about childish.
