Maastricht Shopping and Maastricht Shopping Districts
(Maastricht, Limburg, Netherlands, NL)
The shopping scene provided by Maastricht is good and a stroll along the cobbled inner-city streets will unearth a profusion of interesting shops and familiar Dutch brands. In total, there are around ten main shopping streets winding their way through central Maastricht, each of which has much to offer in the way of high-street fashion, jewellery, souvenirs, and of course, coffee.
Department stores are always an integral part of the shopping in Maastricht, such as the centrally located De Bijenkorf, close to the St. Servaas Bridge. Since the department stores, arcades and malls do not dominate the city centre itself, many people consider the city to be one of the most attractive places to spend your money in the whole of the Netherlands, with central Maastricht retaining much character and appeal.
Maastricht Shopping: When to Shop / Opening Hours - Maastricht, Netherlands, NL
Much of central Maastricht has been completely pedestrianised although the shops are by no means clustered in one place, being quite spread out and often lining the scenic banks of the River Meuse and generally still within the historical city centre itself.
Always popular are the locally produced bitter chocolates, known as the Mestreechter Steerkes, while for others, the Maastricht beers, such as the Wyckse Witte, make the perfect souvenir.
In 2006 and 2007, the city of Maastricht saw the arrival of two major shopping streets, Entre Deux and the Mosae Forum, respectively. The choice of shops here is huge and being covered, people come here to shop, whatever the weather. However, if you are looking for a bargain, the Saturday flea market on the city's Stationsstraat is hard to beat, as are the Wednesday and Friday markets in the city centre, on the Market Square itself.
Other good shopping opportunities in Maastricht present themselves along stretches such as Havenstraat, Plankstraat, Stokstraat and the Kesselskade, next to the Maasboulevard.
